Tongits has been a staple in Filipino households for generations. Now at Ph Pinas, you can enjoy it anytime, anywhere – whether you're in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, or anywhere in the provinces. Tara na, kumita tayo!
Ask any Filipino what card game they played most as a kid, and there's a good chance the answer is Tongits. Born right here in the Philippines – most likely in Pangasinan – Tongits is a three-player rummy-style card game that blends strategy, memory, and a healthy dose of reading your opponents. It is fast, social, and endlessly replayable. No wonder it became one of the most-played games from the baryo all the way up to city apartments.
At Ph Pinas, we built our Tongits rooms to feel as natural as sitting around a banig mat with your barkada. The interface is clean and straightforward, the deal animations are crisp, and the entire experience works smoothly on your mobile – because let's be honest, most Filipinos are playing on their phones anyway.
Whether you are catching up on a lazy afternoon, on a break from work, or looking to put some real peso action behind your card skills, Ph Pinas has a Tongits table for you right now.
Ph Pinas brings authentic Filipino card game culture to every screen across the country.
Tongits is played with a standard 52-card deck by exactly three players. The goal is simple: get rid of all the cards in your hand – or hold the lowest total point value when the game ends. Here is how a round runs at Ph Pinas:
The dealer (nagdistribute) gets 13 cards; the other two players each get 12. The remaining cards form the draw pile (stock) in the centre.
On your turn, draw one card from the stock. You can then meld (lay down) sets and runs from your hand. A set is three or four cards of the same rank; a run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit.
You may add cards from your hand onto any exposed meld on the table – yours or another player's. This is called sapaw and it is one of the key offensive moves in the game.
After drawing (and optionally melding or sapawing), discard one card face-up to the discard pile. Your turn ends.
You win by going Tongits (emptying your hand completely) or by calling a fight (draw) when the stock runs out or at a strategic moment. The player with the lowest remaining card points wins the pot.
Point totals matter when a draw is called. Lower is better – the player with the lowest hand value takes the pot.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Low |
| 2 – 9 | Face value | 2 pts, 3 pts… 9 pts |
| 10 | 10 points | |
| Jack (J) | 10 points | High |
| Queen (Q) | 10 points | High |
| King (K) | 10 points | High |
Being able to quickly recognise which cards in your hand can form valid melds is the foundation of good Tongits play. At Ph Pinas, the game highlights valid melds for you, but knowing them by heart will make you faster and more decisive at the table.
Three cards of the same rank. Example: 7♠ 7♥ 7♦. You can extend it to four of a kind for even better point reduction.
Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Example: 4♣ 5♣ 6♣. Runs can be extended by additional cards of the same suit in order.
Adding a card from your hand to an existing meld on the table – yours or another player's. Reduces your hand points and can block opponents from making the same play.
You empty your hand completely – the instant win condition. All your cards have been melded or discarded with nothing left. The pot goes straight to you.
Ph Pinas makes Tongits accessible whether you are a beginner or a seasoned card shark.
Smart strategy is what keeps Ph Pinas Tongits players ahead of the competition.
Tongits looks simple on the surface, but there is a lot of depth once you start playing regularly. The players who win consistently at Ph Pinas are not lucky – they follow patterns that give them an edge over the long run.
Jacks, Queens, and Kings carry 10 points each. Holding two of them late in the game and losing a draw fight is a painful way to burn chips. Get them out fast through melds or strategic discards.
What your opponents throw away tells you a lot about what they are collecting. If someone keeps discarding hearts, they are probably not building a heart run – which might mean that suit is safe to discard yourself.
Calling a fight (draw) is a strong move, but only if you are confident your hand total is lower than both opponents. Miscalling a fight when someone has a better hand means the pot goes to them. On Ph Pinas, the hand totals are revealed automatically – so the tension is real.
Do not just sapaw to reduce your own points – use it to block an opponent who looks close to going Tongits. Adding to their meld can disrupt their hand count and buy you more turns to catch up.
